What do I love?

I am loving Google's fun new search engine, www.wdyl.com.  WDYL, which stands for What Do You love?, seemed to have magically appeared in the last days of June.  But it wasn't until recently that I discovered it for myself while riding the waves of my favorite design sites.

Despite often being an inevitable overlord of the world wide web, Google has always been one of my favorite net-things.  It's an innovator with a heart, and this new endeavor is proof of that.

What do you love? It's a simple, succinct question.  And when you type in your answer, Google brings in the goods that seem to say, "Well, let me nurture that love affair."

The question itself moved me.  As I stared at the blank space with the cursor blinking incessantly while it waited for my response, my mind was in shambles.  What do I love?

It was the perfect question at this time in my life.

I had recently gone through a whole slew of MAJOR changes.  In the last three months, I had moved out of the country I had been living in for over 27 years, said goodbye to my family and friends, left a promising career, moved into a completely new home in a foreign land, and got married to the man I had been engaged to twice (perhaps a story for another day).

Because I am still technically an "alien" in this new home of mine, I am not yet obliged -- or more appropriately, allowed -- to work.  So my husband -- bless his heart -- has been working hard to keep the two of us alive and well.  While we are living in relative comfort, there is hardly room for excess.

In a society where individuals are almost always defined by their profession, I'm the proverbial bum. Thankfully, not by choice.  But still, it is unsettling.  For most of my life, I was always "busy" so this was one of the most difficult changes I've been dealing with.

From another standpoint, my current situation sounds like an extended vacation.  For the most part, it actually is.  It is a blissful time to do the things most people only say they intend to do but never get around to -- like curl up in bed to read a good book, learn a useless skill, get in touch with old friends, or try out the new "in" thing that everyone's talking about.

Since coming here, I have learned to cook (a feat for someone who has never fried an egg in her life), and even bake cupcakes and cookies. I have become highly domesticated -- learning to do the laundry, clean the house, and mow the lawn.  I've finished reading Assholes Finish First, The Book of Awesome, andMythbusters (The next books on my list have more literary meat in it, including Son of a Witch, Water for Elephants, and A Song of Ice and Fire series). I've been trying out different "in" workouts like P90X, Zumba, and Zero Gravity Boxing.  And I've set up this blog.

Everyday, with every endeavor, as I get closer to answering the question, "What do I love?," I am also discovering the answer to "Who am I?"
